One veteran user, that replaced the 980, a predecessor with the new 955, was very happy with the alert detection features. There were noticeably fewer false alarms with this model. Another great observation he made was in the speed of performance. Because police and state troopers sit without their radar on and will then suddenly turn it on to avoid being detected by radar detectors, the 955 is capable of immediately registering their signal. This is a great improvement in efficiency. The design is attractive and does not need to be unplugged when the car is not in operation, because of the low voltage detection feature.

Some of the negatives that owners of the new 955 pointed out were the long straight cord that was once part of the package is no longer supplied. Instead there is a short coiled cord. The plug also has been changed from a power plug to a telephone jack and the connection to the jack is on the right side of the unit. This radical change in power supply features makes the unit less compatible with older set ups in cars that were using previous models. These changes forced users to purchase adapters or have the units rewired in some way.

Another complaint by Beltronics 955 owners was that when they had a problem during the warranty period, Beltronics Customer Service would not honor the warranty. One such user developed a display malfunction less than one month after his purchase of the unit. Beltronics told him that since he purchased the unit from Amazon and not an authorized reseller, they would not honor the warranty. High temperatures were also reported to be a problem with the accuracy of detecting radar. If the temperature rises into the hundreds, as in Arizona, while the unit is on, which produces its own heat, the unit will give service code readouts in error.

The X and K bands will also pick up automatic door openers in shopping center parking lots and set off the alert. Customers who did have problems with the unit not operating property and did get warranty coverage, has to wait about two months to get the unit repaired.
